About this deal

We had to essentially put a pregnant fox in a purpose-built den that was designed for shooting with camera traps. This Blu-ray edition only comes with a pair of bonus features, Berger’s aforementioned commentary track and a brief 18-minute making-of that touches the main points but doesn’t go as deep as I wished it had. Once the disc is inserted in the player, the movie begins immediately; no promos or previews precede it. As a German soldier, author Erich Maria Remarque witnessed firsthand much of the horror that defined that war, and his later depiction of it stands as a subtle yet unabashed diatribe against such senseless violence and destruction.

Based on the 1929 novel by Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet on the Western Front takes place in Northern France on the front lines towards the end of World War I. Watching people slowly stab one another to death, then feel inherent remorse over what they've had to do, as shells blow craters in the land, oblivious to whether or not anybody might have been standing on it, mounted guns shred troops, and tanks roll around to finish the job. Featurette: "100 Years of Universal: Restoring the Classics" (HD, 9 minutes) – This promotional, yet reverential, piece examines the importance of film preservation and the painstaking process of restoration. An undeniable technical feat, Sam Mendes' quest for sound, fury and the impression of single-take continuity overshadows all else, leading to an audiovisually stunning native 4K release with Dolby Vision and Atmos. The film adds a parallel storyline not found in the book, which follows the armistice negotiations to end the war.Remarque is not as interested in the war and geopolitics as he is in the war as human absurdity made manifest. Although, once again, given Netflix also provides an inferior but still impressive Atmos track, there's still that question over the cost of this upgrade.

A new adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front is now on 4K and Blu-ray that follows a young soldier in the atrocities of war. Theatrical Trailer (SD, 3 minutes) – This re-release trailer makes us really appreciate Universal's meticulous restoration. Clarity is more refined, the image more textured, artefacts absolutely non-existent, with the higher bitrate leaving you with a visibly more impressive image, that still revels in the bloody, muddy horrors of war, but does so with demo precision. What sets 'All Quiet on the Western Front' apart from similar genre entries is the bleakness of its story, the disillusionment of its characters, and its passionate and uncompromising anti-war message. We reviewed the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of All Quiet on the Western Front on an LG 55B7 Dolby Vision 4K Ultra HD OLED TV with a Panasonic DP-UB820EB-K Dolby Vision HDR10+ 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. And when one factors in the challenges and limitations of early sound technology, the feat becomes all the more remarkable. He sobs and apologizes to the man as he rifles through the dead soldier’s belongings, including a photo of his wife and child and what is presumably a letter from home. The story also cuts away at times to the German leadership, both those at the top of the chain who ultimately negotiate an armistice with the Allies and the local German general who demands that the men under his command launch a final offensives, mere minutes before the cease-fire is to take effect, to take back territory they had previously lost.
