About this deal

Responding to the historical erasure and scarcity of informal community spaces across the city, the Pavilion references and pays homage to existing and erased places that have held communities over time and continue to do so today. The 18ft statue of Achilles, the Greek hero of the Trojan War, commemorates the soldier and politician, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852). I will say this book whets my appetite for the upcoming Netflix series on Sobhraj entitled “The Serpent”.

Serpentine - Jonathan Kellerman

One thing that struck me as I read this was the similarity between the description of Sobhraj and Bugliosi-Gentry's description of Charles Manson in "Helter Skelter". It is right along the path, and if walking to the north, on the edge of The Serpentine, look to the right, just before the waterfall, which goes down to a small pond. The Huntress fountain, located in the Rose Garden, features a bronze figure of Diana, the goddess of hunting, shooting an arrow. But still, I soldiered on because I was reading a brilliantly written account of one of the most sociopathic, self-serving and evil conmen and murderer that’s ever walked this earth. The forms in the Pavilion are a result of abstracting, superimposing and splicing elements from architectures that vary in scales of intimacy, translating the shapes of London into the Pavilion structure in Kensington Gardens. Over several months in late 1975 and early 1976, the French serial killer (although of Asian and Indian descent) murdered tourists on the ‘hippie trail’.

Serpentine Artistic Director Hans Ulrich Obrist and CEO Bettina Korek selected this year’s architect with advisors Sir David Adjaye OBE, Professor Lesley Lokko and David Glover alongside the Serpentine team – Julie Burnell, Head of Construction and Buildings, and the project’s curator Natalia Grabowska. But let’s not think about anything quite so cold and brr right now: if you want to enjoy the often-promised heatwave in the middle of Zone 1 and are looking to cool off in style, a dip in the Serpentine is just the ticket. The Serpentine Lido is home to the Serpentine Swimming Club, and boating is also available if you prefer to be on the water rather than in it. Then again, this is a work of non-fiction, which means you’re reading about real people and the generation-altering pain this individual inflicted. This was the Manson family without the hippies, this was the Manson family ready to wage war on the hippies through, a different sort of means. In 1665, during the Great Plague, the park became an impromptu camp site, providing refuge to many citizens fleeing the infected areas of the City. The past year has drawn these themes sharply into focus and has allowed me the space to reflect on the incredible generosity of the communities that have been integral to this Pavilion.

Pollinator Pathmaker is a living sculpture made of plants, designed to prioritise the needs of endangered pollinating insects, rather than to please humans. One thing, which I had never noticed before was a commemorative statue to Queen Caroline, who created The Serpentine, located right by the Serpentine Waterfall, on the very eastern edge of the lake.So the green lawns here have been naturalised, and resown with wildflowers, making it a haven for wildlife. I marveled at Thompson's true crime novel-esq dialogue, but 'they were my family' Sobhraj utters when some of his employees see the writing on the wall and do a moonlight flit, in much the same way Sobhraj had spent his life doing, of course with the trail of destruction behind him, and the employees, their lives, but only just.

First published in 1979, Serpentine continues to offer a reading experience as frightening as it is unforgettable. Ladies refreshed themselves at the ‘Cheesecake House’, with syllabubs made from cream whipped with sugar and wine. Song tried to raise her son alone in French Saigon at the time, when she met a French Lieutenant who was willing to marry Song and bring her to Paris along with Charles. Charles father, a tailor, abandoned Song, Charles mother, and young Charles when he found out that she was pregnant with his child. Just as someone starts getting tired of reading your weird obsession with a minor detail that has nothing to do with the overall plot, you spend twice as long going on about nothing just to piss the reader off.
