About this deal

There are many famous novels of the first world war; Goodbye to All That, Testament of Youth, All Quiet on the Western Front and many others, fine books all, but Covenant With Death stands head and shoulders above them.

The last 15 pages were originally sealed with a warning that they should not be viewed by children or "people of a sensitive nature" due to their "inescapably horrible" nature. HNS Awards have helped discover and launch the author careers of Michel Faber, Ruth Downie, Hilary Green, Martin Sutton, Kelleigh Greenberg-Jephcott, Nikki Marmery, Margaret Skea, Warwick Cairns, Katherine Mezzacappa and Elizabeth Macneal. Told from the point of view of Mark Fenner, a young man who worked on a Sheffield newspaper, it follows the experience of the young men who joined up out of a sense of duty and patriotism and their experience of life and death in Kitchener’s Army, serving in one of the Pals Battalions created to support the war effort. Covenant with Death is a book about three chums who joined the British Army at the start of the war. This is a very interesting book and still relatively easy to find - the challenge is finding an example with the seal still intact!

I thought the author did an excellent job showing how the town's people react during the complex case. Your covenant with death will be annulled, And your agreement with Sheol will not stand; When the overflowing scourge passes through, Then you will be trampled down by it.

A touch of light bruising to the backstrip ends, and a narrow sliver of light toning to the rear free endpaper. It also delves deeply into race relations, prohibition, and intimate relationships all from a young man's perspective. The length of the covenant being seven years is not found in this passage but is seen in Daniel 9:27 and in Jesus’ exposition of the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24). A beautiful married woman is murdered, and given the circumstances, her husband is the obvious suspect. That makes this book unique – no one else can tell the story of the City Battalion using such strong evidence.

Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to him, "How long until the fulfillment of the vision of the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, and the surrender of the sanctuary and of the host to be trampled?

Harris wrote over 80 novels (perhaps the most famous being The Sea Shall Not Have Them) but this is probably his best. Never sentimental it is heart-breakingly sad in places, devastating in its assessment of the war and a testimony to that lost generation who gave everything. A thrilling suspense story and a fascinating inquiry into human nature and the true meaning of justice, A Covenant with Death was a New York Times bestseller and the basis for a feature film starring George Maharis and Gene Hackman.Jesus has disannulled the agreement with death we were bound in through the sin of Adam, and further through the sins of the children of Israel.
