About this deal

A dysfunctional family meets Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None with a truly gasp-inducing twist. After Conor goes to confront the intruder, Daisy, Rose, and Trixie discover him dead with a news article stuffed in his mouth. Things weren’t as sophisticated in 1975 as they might be now, and my blue coloring was blamed on my traumatic birth. Case in point: most of the characters in Daisy Darker, Alice Feeney’s latest, are horrible, awful people, yes, but even worse?

I also have a Spoiler Discussion Post for Rock Paper Scissors, which includes news on the movie adaptation. With an overarching sense of doom and danger lurking at every turn, Feeney has created something both entirely creepy and completely riveting in Daisy Darker. On the kitchen chalkboard, a sinister poem suggests that every member of the family will be murdered. I find it impossible to stop scrutinizing the mechanics and relax and enjoy them like I used to—unless they’re written by Alice Feeney.

It's creepy being trapped on a remote island with a dead body, but there's literally no way off and a storm has halted communication with the mainland. Frank: a composer devoted to music more than his family, a selfish man whose career always comes first, abandoning his wife, forgetting children’s birthday, messing around.

According to Daisy’s memories, they all thought she was dead but didn’t want to get in trouble, so agreed to throw her over the cliff.Twenty-nine years after my traumatic arrival, I’m very grateful to have had more time than anyone predicted. I would love to visit this Victorian house with its turrets and turquoise tiled roof, its 80 clocks on the walls, its lounge with unique wallpaper, its rooms with so many doors. But then, as all of the red herrings continued to pop up, I became more focused on Nana’s agent as a suspect. A dark, twisty tale about a dysfunctional family… Feeney’s nod to Agatha Christie’s classic mystery And Then There Were None adds a delightful twist to this quirky thriller.

Talk to me in comments and be sure to come over to my Spoiler Discussion Post for Daisy Darker so we can discuss our suspects, theories and thoughts! I felt so sorry for her, but also felt like I could identify with her, she is definitely a bookworm and prefers being at home in front of the fire. Illness/a fatal condition: I thought it was interesting that the author used a chronic/fatal illness/condition to be the reason why Daisy was an outcast in this family, but I think that even before that was found out, she already was doomed to be the odd one out. I don’t like all the infidelity and the secrets and toxic relationships between couples, revealing the father of a child years after their birth, or sibling rivalry… all that happened in this book and more but I LOVED it. If the crime is not committed in a room with no obvious way for any murderer to have gotten out, it is not a locked room mystery. There is such an evolution in what you think or suspect of the various characters and it’s just not a clean cut story at all. Some traveled from other countries just to watch my open-heart surgeries; it made me feel like a superstar and a freak at the same time. Death is a life-changing deadline, and I’m forever in debt to everyone who helped me outstay my welcome. The story is narrated by granddaughter, Daisy Darker, Nana’s favorite, a baby born with a heart condition which caused her to die eight times before the age of thirteen.
