This book reminds me a little of Goldtiger which was a humorous pastiche of 60s spy comic serialisations that would appear syndicated in newspapers. In this episode, Jamie reveals the importance of experimentation and role of Gorillaz fans in his creative process. Notably, among the book's many contributors, are four former Gorillaz collaborators: Del the Funky Homosapien, Robert Smith, Laurie Vincent and Jack Black. Here, Ruff Mercy enlightens Kate on how his life-long love for hip-hop impacted his approach to sampling other artists’ work. In 2015 The Suggestionists, an exhibition of prints at the Saatchi Gallery in London, demonstrated an exciting new direction in Hewlett’s practice.

There are multiple fold-out pages and pages printed on acrylic to reveal inkwork over pencils and just an attention to detail that I wasn't expecting, but am thrilled is found here. It nicely covers his work from early Tank Girl to projects that haven't received much attention in the US, concepts for projects and a nice collection of Gorillaz pieces. It's really a piece unlike any other and it is such a shame there's no sequel (even if the Gorillaz Almanac seems to be in a somewhat similar vein). Contributing artists include Ruff Mercy, Kim Jung Gi, Robert Smith, Kerbscrawler Ghost, Robert Valley, Craig McCracken and Tim McCourt andMax Taylor. As for the subject of the book, Jamie Hewlett is a great artist and I recommend for any fans if his work to get this book. An English comic creator, animator, designer, illustrator, and director, best known as the co-creator of the comic book Tank Girl with Alan Martin and co-creator of the virtual band Gorillaz, alongside Blur front man Damon Albarn.

Over the last few months he has disarmed packed rooms of rowdy concert goers, leaving them silent as they hold fast to every syllable sung. The Gorillaz Art Book is an art book made by Jamie Hewlett in collaboration with fourty other artists illustrating their interpretations of 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle, and Russel in one expansive volume of original artwork.
