About this deal

However, after my trip to DragonCon and seeing all the amazing San cosplay, I knew I had to do Ashitaka next. After I whittle down the wood so that the bow tapers, I was going to be coating the entire thing before painting it. He travels to his home village to seek the cure for his curse, but before he does, his sister, Kaya, gifts him with her crystal dagger as a sign of her constant loyalty and devotion. I have a couple of different ideas at how I can create a real life version of the glowing “worms” on Ashitaka’s arm, but I’ve never worked with electronics and LEDs so this will be quite the adventure when I get to it (and you’ll get to read all about it).

It’s probably the most important tool you should own if you’re doing painting, foamsmithing, and woodworking like this. In addition to using a faux suede for the outside layer, I also used some leftover faux sherpa fur from my shoes to line the inside of the quiver. I designed the hilt so that the blade would actually slide inside the hilt and then get epoxied together, so I really wasn’t worried about it breaking.

It is frequently used to describe vengeful spirits, dead spirits, live spirits, or other supernatural entities who are believed to cause disease and harm. I clamped it all together really well and let it sit overnight–you really can’t ever let anything dry too much. While the hood worked fine, it was the first piece I made and after spending a lot more time with reference photos, I realized the hood opening wasn’t the right shape. So for Thursday, I had my hair up and in a bun and had no curse on my arm, just like at the beginning of the film.

For con safety and because I didn’t need it to have any significant draw weight, I also heated and bent the entire length of the pipe so that there is just enough give in the bow that I can pull the string and have it look realistic, but not enough that it really has any throw strength. Lastly, I sewed a couple of loops into a length of braided cotton rope and glued it down to the sheath. The glued fabric, just like on my sword sheath, has a really nice leather look to it, especially once painted and weathered. I ended up making elastic bands for around the top of the calves instead of ties to hold them up because I decided it would look more appropriate to the cosplay, and I didn’t want to have to worry about them untying and falling off when I was walking around. At Wizard World Portland, I attended a panel discussion about PVC foam board as a possible armor material.

Although metallic spray paint provides an adequate metal look, the best way to achieve a realistic metallic finish is with metal! Thankfully, when I attended Wizard World Portland, I attended a great panel about making armor utilizing PVC foam board.

I decided on doing my own sort of design by combining things from different photos and focusing on making it as realistic as possible. Prince Ashitaka is the last prince of the Emishi people, a once-great tribe that is now only known as one village. I recently started foamsmithing after an interview with Bill Doran of Punished Props, so I really wanted to do a cosplay with a full set of armor to practice what I’ve been learning.

When you hear the words Ashitaka, you might think of Princess Mononoke, in which Prince Ashitaka refers to brighter tomorrow. I painstakingly agonized over and chose fur for making these but just ran out of time to make them before ECCC.Apologies again for not having more intermediate steps but after I had the PVC shaped, I gave the entire thing a light sanding for better paint adherence, primed it, and then coated it with a matte spray paint that was the color I wanted. Emishi people lived in Honshu’s northeast until the beginning of the Muromachi period, and this is a great reminder of their existence.
