This movie meant something and with Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, Alan Rickman, and even Christian Slater's performances - it revealed that there was new life in this beloved character that not only did great things but had fun while doing so. Over the decades, many films have been made about the legendary Robin Hood, who stole from the rich to give to the poor.

Even a few years later, the decision to make one of the film’s unambiguous heroes a Muslim would likely have been controversial, but this is another aspect in which the film has aged well. Reflecting on the grizzly veteran now, it's interesting to think about him as once a swashbuckling, arrow-firing, rope-swinging action hero, but that's precisely what he first found massive success with, over 30 years ago, providing the most memorable incarnation of Robin Hood in modern cinema. With his Moorish companion Azeem (Morgan Freeman, Unforgiven), he joins a band of peasant rebels to do battle against the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman, Die Hard) and win the hand of the fair Maid Marian (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, The Abyss), cousin of the absent King of England. This grand, swashbuckling adventure in the classic tradition is brought to life by an all-star supporting cast, including Christian Slater (True Romance), Brian Blessed (Flash Gordon) and a memorable cameo from Sean Connery (himself a former Robin Hood), plus an instantly recognisable score by Michael Kamen (Highlander) – not to mention a chart-topping Bryan Adams theme song. What resulted in the end was a film that Costner still draws ridicule from, especially considering it’s the meat between the quality of Dances with Wolves and JFK.Textures are incredible, with the exteriors looking true to life and the intricacies of John Bloomfield’s costuming leaping off the screen. There are varying degrees of film grain still intact, but it never swarms or seems busy, but rather has a consistent base that keeps the filmic quality preserved. But since I can’t mine through their new and legacy documentaries, I can’t give points for my experience. Everyone discusses the origins of the story and character, making a modern-day telling of this classic tale, and some funny anecdotes from the location shoot.

Set in the 1100s, Prince of Thieves departs from the traditional origins of Robin by making him a soldier/prisoner of war in King Richard’s Crusade in the middle east. ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES comes to 4K UHD™ Blu-ray™ in a variety of Limited Edition / Steelbook sets, on November 28th, from Arrow. It starts with Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street on 11/17 in both Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD (a UK only title, but it’s already been released here in the States on both formats by Paramount).

This is also featured on the 4K case, but that art is reversible, with the other side showing the original poster. It's perfect to me, when I put the disc in I clocked that 142 minute run-time and thought; "Hmm, it's already quite late. The extended cut of the film is one of the options to choose from and it's a whopping twelve extra minutes with more Alan Rickman. Back in 1991, Kevin Costner ruled the cinematic landscape and with his filmmaking partner Kevin Reynolds in hand for this and Waterworld, the two seemed unstoppable. With native 4K from a shot-on-film source, we're in good hands for Arrow's presentation, albeit under the caveat that Prince of Thieves was largely shot on location, in Nottingham no less, and so you have to be prepared for all that comes with a 90's UK location shoot, including variable lighting and the cascading ramifications of that.
