Announced in November 2019, it’s the third Art lens designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras, following the Sigma 35mm f1. To make this lens as easy to use as possible by photographers in all fields, it features not only SIGMA’s most advanced mechanical systems but also the company’s latest software. We did note some field curvature for macro shooting, which leads to rather soft corners, but the 24–70mm F2. Contrast is well maintained across the image and the lens largely avoids washed out areas of the image when shooting at bright sources of light. Of the lenses in this comparison only the Nikon has a special coating on the front lens to repel water, dust, and dirt, and make for easier cleaning. The two Sigma lenses perform similarly, with the Art having slightly less barrel distortion between 24mm and 28mm and slightly more pincushion from 35mm to 70mm. Geometrical MTF does not consider the diffraction quality of light, yet it tends to show higher values than actual image. All those still viewed images created 50+ years ago with none of the coatings, correction or speed of even this lowly Sigma 2. I expect that bringing this lens up to the new Sigma quality standards would make a big difference in my recommendations.
