The Parent ego state refers to the behaviours, thoughts and feelings that are copied, learned or even borrowed from our parents, parental figures, or significant others. Put simply, this is us being us, without those external influences of our Parent and Child ego states. A phenomenological diagnosis may be described as re-experiencing the past, rather just remembering it. The beauty of the model is that people intuitively understand the concepts very quickly and accurately discuss which ego-state they may have been in at given times.

If you can understand the concepts in this book, you have a blueprint for how to read individuals, and in turn, an excellent guide on how to form solid, foundational relationships with all types. In autonomie kan iemand vrij kiezen tussen Volwassene, Ouder of Kind; in script gebeurt dat onbewust. When two people communicate, one person initiates a transaction with the transactional stimulus (see the above Transactions Defined section for a definition of the transaction stimulus). As Berne gained confidence in this theory, he went on to introduce these in a 1957 paper – one year before he published his seminal paper introducing Transactional Analysis. Similarly to strokes, if the intimacy a child experiences is dysfunctional, it can lead to problems. These are archaic memories that we are unable to remember on a conscious level, but lie within our unconscious. The fourth edition of Transactional Analysis Counselling in Action is, in my view, the best available introduction to the basic techniques used by TA counsellors and therapists.

Relationship issues - between families, friends and couples - tend to benefit greatly, as TA encourages clients to address problems that have built up over time. Sessions can be carried out in the form of one-on-one counselling, with families, couples or groups. By identifying and defining a transaction, Berne provided to the psychotherapeutic sciences the “atom” that was needed to allow for rigorous analysis. Berne (1961) states that “ a phenomenological diagnosis is validated if the individual can fully re-experience in full intensity, with little weathering”. TA TODAY is equally suitable for self-directed learning or as background reading for college courses.

TA therapy recognises that we are greatly motivated by the reinforcement we get as children, and if this was dysfunctional, we are likely to adopt dysfunctional patterns of living as we get older. The functional model diagrams how we use what is in the structural model, and reflects the descriptions of the component parts of the ego states. One of the exciting things about transactional analysis is the simple models and language it employs, which help you to understand why you have become who you are today and how (and in what ways) you relate to other people.

I appreciate the space for reflection which can be used in a group or individually to promote thought and further discussion; the summary of key ideas to which the reader can easily refer and the indication of further reading which enables the reader to explore and enhance his/her learning and understanding. Spitz observed that infants deprived of handling – in other words, not receiving any strokes – were more prone to emotional and physical difficulties. A good question for this may be “ How did your parents act when they were decorating your home as a child? In the years since Berne’s death in 1970, TA practitioners have introduced new concepts and techniques that are now at the very heart of the discipline. In counselling, TA therapy is very versatile, for it can be used in a wide range of areas and incorporates key themes from humanistic, integrative and psychoanalytical and psychodynamic therapies.
