About this deal

Patients want therapists to pay attention to the minute details of their life: This gives a good jump-start on bonding. The Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Stanford University, he divides his practice between Palo Alto, where he lives, and San Francisco, California. The Gift of Therapy is an excellent book for people who want to learn more about providing or receiving high-quality psychotherapy. To answer that question one must attend to both “content” and “process” — the two major aspects of therapy discourse.

While I definitely think there are some universal lessons that apply to all counselors no matter where you're working there were a lot that I don't think apply to a beginning counselor. A heightened sensibility to existential issues deeply influences the nature of the relationship of the therapist and patient and affects every single therapy session. Each of the contributors has deliberately taken the pains to try to communicate in a way that will be intelligible to the student, as well as offer material that will be new, informative, and challenging to the more sophisticated clinician. So, existential psychotherapy is a dynamic therapy which, like the various psychoanalytic therapies, assumes the presence of unconscious forces which influence conscious functioning. If you think you may want to be trained as a therapist or counselor, this book may provide excellent insight into how an expert counselor thinks and behaves, and it is full of wry and honest anecdotes about clients he has worked with, and all of their peculiarities. Abstract This study examines therapists’ dreams about their patients from the Jungian and the relational perspectives. The psychology of decision making is also glanced upon since it is another boundary experience, located somewhere between freedom and death. However, the very fact that it is not systematic and structured makes it a great introductory book for patients to psychotherapy: if therapists train themselves to look through your window, here’s your chance to look through theirs. Readers seeking more theoretical background may wish to read my texts, Existential Psychotherapyand The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy, the mother books for this work.

This is an entertaining, informative and insightful read for both beginners and more experienced therapists, patients, students and everyone with an interest in the subject. Three of the ten exhibited volumes were books of numbered “tips” — on animal husbandry, sewing, gardening. As the reader may have already gathered, the emphasis in this book is primarily focused on the professional and practical aspects rather than on the academic aspects of psychotherapy.I'm not a therapist but this book was full of so much wisdom about communicating with others that a lot the material is applicable to both my personal life and in my work as a teacher.

It doesn’t matter if one finds meaning; what matters is the engagement in the pursuit; and therapists need to remove all isolation-creating obstacles to this engagement. Hence, this volume, in no way, is meant to be a systematic manual; instead, I intend it as a supplement to a comprehensive training program. A great many of our patients have conflicts in the realm of intimacy, and obtain help in therapy sheerly through experiencing an intimate relationship with the therapist. So as to help your patients achieve this, never reinforce victimhood – even if nine-tenths of the bad things that happened to them are someone else’s fault, focus on the one-tenth in which their actions mattered. Likewise it was found that 26 out of 31 dreams took place in either a) a street, a road, a route, a corridor; b) en route to somewhere; c) a therapy room and/or building; d) a house. However, when Yalom deals with a single patient, he operates within an existential frame of reference, which is firmly rooted within the conviction that patients fall into despair due to a confrontation with the “harsh facts of human condition – the ‘givens’ of existence.
