About this deal

I knocked off 1 star because I expected a story that revolved more around the horses and his tales of being in the stables - not the mere 3 or 4 chapters that included the horses. Thank you to Bookouture Audio for allowing me to listen to the audiobook of The Stable Boy of Auschwitz by Henry Oster and Dexter Ford through Netgalley in exchange for an unbiased and honest review. He was the last survivor of the 2,011 Jews who were rounded up by the Gestapo and deported from Cologne.

Hachette Book Group is a leading book publisher based in New York and a division of Hachette Livre, the third-largest publisher in the world. In the back of Henry’s mind, he knew he could never make a mistake, steal food or become too weak to work. The Stable Boy of Auschwitz is the heart-breaking, mesmerizing, and unforgettable true story that will destroy your faith in humanity .In the darkest moment of history, one child found the courage and strength to survive the unimaginable. I just hope if I ever have to go through something similar that I have the will and strength to endure as he did.

We all know about Auschwitz and many of you will have read fiction books based on actual events throughout this time, indeed one of my favourite genres is historical fiction. enforces the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and therefore access cannot be granted at this time. Henry was 5 years old when Hitler took power and this memoir follows years of his life through those horrific times and how, against all odds, he survived. I hope that this book and countless others like it stand the test of time and help remind everyone to treat everyone with kindness and respect no matter their culture or background. I teared up towards the end because of how important it is to continue to tell stories like Henry's so that future generations won't forget and it truly will be "never again. When his father dies from starvation, he is forced to take care of his mother and he proves to be a smart and resourceful young man.

Henry not only mastered the English language but went on to attend and graduate from college and then optometry school. The Holocaust is such a difficult yet interesting topic, I’ve read a fair few books about similar stories of survival and never giving up. However, it was inspiring to hear that after surviving his time in Auschwitz, he moved in with his uncle in America, and then got into optometry school. The months following the end of the war were extremely difficult and assimilation back into society does not happen overnight. The book was pretty much the definition of telling rather than showing the audience; while the events described were awful, it almost felt emotionally distant because of the way it was written.

He was a very special man who lived every day of his life, as his wife mentioned, as if his cup was half full instead of half empty. Over the years, I have read many personal memoirs by survivors of the Holocaust but few have pulled at my heartstrings and inspired me as much as The Stable Boy of Auschwitz: A Heartbreaking True Story of Courage and Survival by Henry Oster and Dexter Ford. He survived air rades agasints train cars, death marches, 12 hour shifts, he escaped mass firing squads, starvation and he lived on a wooden pallet for 10 years total! EVERYONE has a right to their beliefs, free speech, and the pursuit of liberty, even if you disagree with them. It is easy to label WW2 as horrible, Hitler as evil, and the Nazis as depraved but it's still just that: a label; a classifying phrase. It is conjectured that this was also this ethos that convinced so many Germans to follow Hitler so wholeheartedly. From the beginning it was clear that it was a story of survival, while it was also clear that there were going to be some real hard times for the boy. I’d NEVER realized how quickly Hitler’s plan came into being; how he wasted no time in turning Germany into a ‘Jew-hating police state. Henry is one of those people that I know from reading this book if I were to meet him I would be instantly drawn to him, his story is remarkable and how he survived is incredible.
