About this deal

We thought about other animals that were under threat of extinction and wrote from their perspective, e. Not every child is going to like this but for those whose imaginations crave deeper, more fantastic stories, this would be perfect for them. Children will also dissect the flowers left behind, identifying and labelling the various parts and explaining their various roles in reproduction and pollination. Some of the illustrations made me very sad thinking about how dissmal our lives can become when we don't stop for the precious things, people, places in front of us - nature, family, friends, students who have something to share.

Varmints by Helen Ward | Waterstones

Its album version, entitled And in the Endless Pause There Came the Sound of Bees, adds an extra fifteen minutes of material and is all the better for it. And, as with everything Jóhannson has composed, it holds space for both abyssal melancholy and a paper hope bridge above it, achieving a tender, if tenuous, balance over the dark.

I bought it from my kids school book fair, neither of them (7 and 5) were very interested in it even after I purchased it and read it to them at home, I guess I prefer for them to love cheerful, colorful books with unicorns and rainbows. There are many themes to be explored through this book, including bravery, courage, friendship and loneliness. Very nicely animated short film that works completely without language and only works properly with the music of Johann Johannsson. Far less enigmatic than that film, ‘Varmints’ instead opts to tell an oft-told story about the destruction of green and pleasant lands through growing industrialisation. A good many reviewers took against ‘Varmints’ due to what they saw as its clichéd, unoriginal subject matter but Craste has managed to breathe life into a potentially hackneyed story through the use of dialogue-free, symbolic imagery and a cast of intriguing, expressive but unidentifiable creatures.

This can mean they are in power and have taken over the environment but as soon as there is hope with one bunny there is always light on the character and the badgers disappear. Really detailed, deep/dark and clever illustrations make the reader really ponder and make meaning of the text. It's an amazing picture book, very mature in subject matter, a book that you'll need to revisit again and again and ponder endlessly.

Whilst their rural home was very beautiful, the sudden building of a fully-formed city in such a short sequence never felt believable and thus I didn't feel the pining as I should. Marc Craste’s ‘Varmints’ shares a similarly poetic approach to storytelling with his BAFTA-winning short ‘Jojo in the Stars’. Overall I think this would be a picturebook that could really allow for quality work in the classroom, with an abundance of learning opportunities: outdoor learning - nature and wildlife, art, lighting and planting seeds. They erect the tall structures, harming their natural world, and going against their own yearnings and instincts while losing a sense of self.

Pupils throughout Middlemarch School thoroughly enjoyed this term’s Take One Book: Cinnamon by Neil Gaiman. This book is very dark but thinks it has to be to give the right message on how important it is to look after the environment around us.Both artists focused their art on doors, however Santhana used bold colours and let us peek behind the doors from India, whereas Viktoria used watercolour and lots of detail to depict doors from all over Europe. Children in KS2 will, I think, love the animation and the central character, and be engaged by the conversations around its content.
