I went and grabbed about 4 different colors (I didn’t love any of the stains to be honest because they looked too rich and dark) to try and mix a few together. Its unique formula allows it to penetrate pine deeply, creating a rich, even color—just the way we wanted it. I brought all of my fabric and wallpaper swatches into the new house to start dreaming up a palette, imagining layers of textures and patterns — steeped in tradition. I may be mistaken but I think wood paneling usually has a top coat on it that would need to be sanded off before re-staining.

I just came across your site and was interested in the staining technique you did for your three compartment desk. For others trying to make this difficult decision… my red oak floors were just redone and I live them.Use soap and warm water to clean up any stains on your hands or clothing, but make sure the stain is fully dried before doing so! Yes, it will look similar but oak has different undertones (oftentimes it has pink or red undertones) so you might experiment with a scrap piece of oak or try in a less conspicuous area to make sure you like the look!

On a practice piece of pine, I did the 2 layers of stain with and without conditioner and like the deeper color without the conditioner. You can find both oil-based and water-based stains for wood, although water-based stains are generally safer and easier to clean up. Take a look around for fun and easy DIYs, pretty parties + entertaining inspiration, and home decor. And I really liked the Provincial but it was too dark on its own and even too dark when stained over the Weathered Oak.

When I went to AmericasMart in January, I saw SO much natural wood finishes in furniture coming back, and most of it had this same white-washed technique where it only settled into the grain.

Aged barrel looks a lot similar to carbon grey but differs in giving darker undertones and ending up with a black shade. After multiple attempts with the semi-transparent oil based stains (I even tried mixing stains together to try and achieve the color I was going for) with no luck, Alex suggested we try gel based stain. This stain also took two heavy coats for the color to be deep enough for me to really get a sense of the color, but it’s still a bit on the light side. You can have it mixed at the paint color to over 200 different colors (including Weathered Oak which is color code MW270). I envisioned a rich, medium, classic wood-tone–something that felt timeless and true to the house’s colonial style.

Adding some of the Provincial to the Weathered Oak to darken the color up a little bit created exactly the color I was wanted. Well, I personally love a weathered, gray finish on my DIY wood projects, but that involves a few steps to achieve and can’t be achieved with one stain color only (that I know of at this time). Should I put weathered oak over all of it to even the tone (wipe on, wipe off) then shellac and use the wax paint mixture? Also I have a few friends that have used wax as a top coat on a dining table, and didn’t have any problems! Most recommended colors include classic grey, weather oak, carbon grey, sun-bleached, and weathered grey.
