About this deal

It also has a time-lapse mode which is great for capturing changes in the environment over a particular season. The detecting distance of PIR motion sensors is 9 meters, and the detecting angle is 120˚ horizontally. Motions out of this range can’t be detected. To use the KEEN camera you will need an activated SIM card (nano). Any SIM card under the O2, EE and Vodafone networks will work. Our recommendation is an EE data plan SIM, which are free to acquire - see here - you would need to activate and top the SIM up to begin using it. After thats done, pop it into the Keen Ranger and follow the instructions on the Reolink app.

Unfortunately, the KEEN Ranger PT uses Micro USB rather that USB Type-C. It’s not that big of deal, but USB-C is always preferred. The next feature is the invisible IR-LEDs, which neither humans nor much of the wildlife can detect. I was thus able to see animals moving around my property undetected. This has presented me with fascinating videos and impressions of foxes, martens, hedgehogs and squirrels. Without this camera, I would have been unaware of what was happening on my property at night. One of the main features that meets my high standards is the camouflage pattern, which is just sensationally well done! Although the pattern is actually smoothly applied and also feels like that, it looks like in 3D optics. The design of the camera is based on a tree, which thus also fits absolutely inconspicuously in its attached environment. But for most people, they simply weren’t practical. They needed to be hardwired, and you needed a dedicated TV and VCR for monitoring and recording. Most importantly, you couldn’t monitor them remotely. At best, you’d come home to a grainy video of your house getting robbed. The KEEN Ranger PT comes with a solar power, so you can keep the internal battery charged when its mounted in the field. This solar panel has a 4m cable so it can be mounted some distance from the camera, and if there is very poor light in the area the camera can last several weeks on a full charge - though this is variable depending on how active the camera is.

The camera also supports Reolink’s cloud storage. You can get 1GB of storage for free, and videos will be saved for 7 days before being automatically deleted. You can also sign up for a paid plan to get a higher storage limit. This camera is based on the Reolink Go PT Plus and the full product name is Keen Ranger PT. The name alone already reveals in which direction the rabbit is running: Trail camera.

However, trail cams can also be used for simple observation. If you think there might be bears in your woods, how cool would it be to get a picture? In our experience, the trigger speeds can vary depending on the size of the animal, and are slower than many high-end trail cameras - though still fast enough to detect reliably. Night recordings are illuminated using no-glow LEDs which are invisible to humans, minimising the risk of detection. It has no-glow LEDs with a flash range of 33ft. The viewing angle of Reolink Go PT Plus is 95° horizontal, 57° vertical, and 115° diagonal. Please make sure that the monitoring area is well within its field of view.If this sounds appealing to you but you’re really looking for a home camera, there are options. The Reolink Go PT Plus is similar in most respects, right down to the form factor. However, it has a plain white housing, which is more suitable for residential use.

In advance of my summary, it must be mentioned that I have never used a trail camera before. I can therefore neither give a comparison to other trail cameras nor speak from experience. My summary is therefore based only on my current test. They’re also commonly used by wildlife preserves and parks. But when you invest in a trail cam, you want to make sure your money is well spent. That’s why we wanted to look at a camera from KEEN, which is owned by Reolink, a highly-respected manufacturer.Note: all photos and videos taken with the Keen are based on the software version as the camera was shipped. During my test, the software was improved several times (including night vision). Before the first use, I charged the camera to 100%. It was then used with a solar panel. During my testing period, I had to charge the camera once via the micro USB port in the home power supply. This was due to ongoing frequent use and weak sunny days.
