About this deal

Shop bough fertilisers contain an N-P-K formula consisting of N for nitrogen, P for phosphorous and K for potash. A good fertiliser will also contain trace elements essential for plant growth. It is a general-purpose fertiliser that comes in the form of a granular feed that contains nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium that plant need with added trace elements. It will provide a wide range of plants enough nutrients throughout the growing season. Dilute a capful (20ml) in 4.5 litres (1 gallon) of water. The potash content is high compared to the nitrogen and phosphorous. Homemade comfrey tea is very similar in content. Gro-Sure All Purpose Soluble Plant Food (12.5-5-25) It will help plants to grow vigorous producing new shoots, flowers in abundance and fruits in larger numbers. It should be used regularly throughout the growing season. It can be used on fruit trees and soft fruit bushes to increase harvests. Light sandy soils tend to be hungrier. Clay soil is much more fertile, so needs less fertiliser. Garden compostI also use Vitax Q4 professional to add to growing media that I’ve used for growing bulbs. When I remove the bulbs from pots in spring I tip the growing medium into a barrow, add a few handfuls of Vitax Q4 professional and mix it up. I use this for potting seasonal bedding plants or even longer term subjects in containers. Vitax Q4 professional is not always recommended for use in pots, mainly because you can overdo it. Personally I do use it as a top dressing on permanently potted subjects – just a handful and then top up with some fresh growing medium. One large 10kg tub can fertiliser up to 40 square metres of land, so if you have plenty of land, you may need to buy more.

The high phosphorous content encourages root development and strong growth so bonemeal is often added to the planting hole when planting bare root roses or other plants. Liquid seaweed (ratios vary) Only add fertilisers to plants before and during the growing season, because these additions tend to be washed out of the soil during winter. For flowers and vegetables apply 140 grams per square metre before sowing seeds and planting plants. Top dress vegetable once or twice during the growing season. Even if you use Vitax Q4 as a general slow release fertiliser at the beginning of the season the Vitax Premium liquids range will really help to give your plants a boost. Just dilute in the watering can and apply when watering. It’s ideal for pots and containers and on all newly planted subjects.Find out how to make your own compost heap Common fertilisers and their N-P-K ratios Vitax Q4 (5.3- 7.5 -10) It can be rather dusty, despite what the manufacturer may say. You need to apply it on still days as it can irritate your eyes and throat. You can say it is a general-purpose fertiliser that has good multitude uses in the garden including containers.

This product was originally developed for commercial growers. Q4 All Purpose Plant Food produces bigger, brighter blooms and bumper sized crops. Organic fertilizers are naturally occurring substances and include biofertilizers, green manure, organic manure and compost. They slowly leach essential nutrients into the soil and improve its overall vitality with time. Synthetic fertilizers are man-made combinations of chemicals and inorganic substances. They typically combine nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and other elements in different ratios. Synthetic fertilizers, unlike their organic counterparts, immediately supply essential nutrients to soil. Tomatoes: 200g per sq.m (Before planting in the soil). Spread 35g per sq.m as a regular feed at 3-4 week intervals. It is recommended that you apply it evenly at the roots below, preferable when the soil or compost is moist. Once applied, you will need to lightly hoe the produce onto the surface and if it is dry to water it in.

Certain leaves left to rot in water form a nutritious liquid - although the process smells rather evil. It’s possible to make a wall-mounted comfrey tea maker using a drainpipe sealed at both ends with removable pieces. Feed the leaves into the top and drain the brown tea from the base after two to three weeks. Dilute before using one part tea to twenty parts water. One thing it cannot replace is phosphorous that is required for root growth. The problem is that this general purpose fertiliser does not have enough phosphorus in the form of phosphate to aid these plants. It will help but you need more to grow your carrots and parsnips. Q4 Pelleted Fertiliser: Apply throughout the growing season Contains vital plant foods and trace elements essential for abundant growth of flowers and crops An easy to handle, low dust, pelleted fertiliser. For best results apply evenly to soil, preferably when it is wet. Q4 Fertiliser is perfect for roses either prior to planting out or for established bushes when it can be applied as a top dressing in the spring.

The confusion in this thread seems to be caused by conflating two things - feeding plants and 'feeding' soil. Chemical fertilizers such as Growmore or Vitax feed plants directly but do little for the soil. Soil health is important, and that is improved by adding composted materials such as animal manures, good garden compost, leafmould, any humus rich material basically, which will naturally increase bio diversity; that bio diversity will naturally provide more trace elements and more nutrients to your plants, but over time rather than in a week or three.Use 140 g/m2 (4 oz/sq yd) before sowing and planting. Top dress vegetables at 70 g/m2 (2 oz/sq yd) once or twice during the summer months. This is often low in nutrients although well-balanced otherwise. The bacteria involved keep nitrogen low. But this organic material improves soil structure when dug in, creating a friable mixture that encourages root growth. Q4 All Purpose Plant Food should be applied to the growing area before the sowing of planting flowers and vegetables takes place. In the summer months it can be used as a top dressing but no more than two applications. A handful corresponds to 35 grams, so you need to use more if you have a large container, less in a small one. Remember applying too much fertilizer can be detrimental as applying too little. Apply before planting or for established plants, in early spring. When top dressing, apply evenly to the soil surface beneath the leaves and branches of the tree. Apples, Pears, Plums: 175 g/m2 (5 oz/sq yd). Currants, Gooseberries, Raspberries: 140 g/m2 (4 oz/sq yd). Strawberries: 70-100 g/m2 (2-3 oz/sq yd).
