About this deal

Cornish said: “Addictive, tender and surprising, Talking at Night is alive at every turn—and the love story I’ve been waiting for. Claire’s voice is all I look for in fiction: distinctive, inviting and evocative, without ever losing pace. I can’t wait to introduce the world to Rosie and Will, and to an extraordinary new writer.” British author Daverley follows a young man and woman through decades of their lives as they experience love, tragedy, and heartache. Talking at Night is a transcendent marvel. Daverley's debut is aching and tender. . . the lush, complex characters reminded me of Sally Rooney's work. AMANDA EYRE WARD, bestselling author of THE JETSETTERS

Talking at Night is a love story, certainly, but it's much more than that. I was rapt. I highly recommend this wonderful novel ANN NAPOLITANO, author of DEAR EDWARDTalking at Night is a masterful and authentic depiction of true love in all its messy, complicated and gut-wrenching glory. Will and Rosie are the perfect, imperfect star-crossed lovers - their story had me enthralled from the start." - Ruth Hogan The writing style often TOLD the story as opposed to SHOWING it-and I NEVER felt emotionally invested although it’s such a MELANCHOLY story. I think because she’d seen and enjoyed my previous novel, and she believed in Talking at Night as a concept, she was happy to take the risk. So I went away and finished it, knowing I had her trust in me, which was such a wonderful motivator after years of writing with no sense of where it might lead.

This beautifully written book begins in a small town in the 1990s and is split into three parts entitled ‘before’, ‘after’, and ‘long after’ (as the book unravels we learn the reasons behind these headings). It follows our couple’s complicated relationship over the next several decades, as they both attempt to navigate the challenges familiar to all of us, from parental expectations to the complexities of family dynamics, love, loss and grief. why was will's story unfinished... she focused entirely too much on rosie- the blandest of them all. i thought there was a reason as to why he didn't wanna attend university- like something wrong with his heart because that was literally how the story was going but she forgot about it and moved on like what... so many plot holes in this shit.

Success!

A beautifully observed, tender love story with characters you really care about…a bit like Normal People. I devoured it.” ―Jojo Moyes, New York Times bestselling author of Someone Else’s Shoes Talking at Night is atranscendent marvel.Spanning decades and introducing readers to lush, complex characters whose witty dialogue reminded me of Sally Rooney’s work,Daverley’s debutis aching and tender, searing and sweet, a story about thepower of love to make even the most broken of us whole.” The characters are well-developed and relatable, making it easy for readers to become invested in their story. The setting, nineties music, sideways glances, sunsets, and bonfires all contribute to the romantic and nostalgic feel of the novel. Talking at Night is a love story, certainly, but it’s much more than that. I was rapt. I highly recommend this wonderful novel.” The book also seemed to me like it was a story that was taking place much EARLIER than in the nineties-it DIDN'T have a very contemporary feel, though perhaps it was authentic for the UK in the nineties?

I’m so glad that comes through, because you empathise with your own characters and can only hope that readers will, too. I don’t start with character maps or anything like that, although sometimes I wonder if that would be easier. I had a sense of these two people – Rosie, a perfectionist, someone striving for something she doesn’t quite understand, always wanting to ‘do the right thing’ – and Will, a troubled, seemingly aloof teenager who actually feels things very deeply, and is a good person despite having done bad things. If you love really gentle, beautiful and very cleverly written love stories, then this is the book for you' FEARNE COTTON An achingly beautiful novel about the people who change us irrevocably. This novel will consume you JILL SANTOPOLO, bestselling author of THE LIGHT WE LOST it hurts to love you but i still love you it's just the way i feel," lana wrote this lyric for will.

A classic will-they-won't-they in the vein of David Nicholls, this novel is impossible to put down' CONSTANZA CASATI, author of CLYTEMNESTRA This book kept me up all night! It's everything I want from a love story, the will they won't they, the romance, but also, there is the truthfulness of reality woven into it. This isn't just escapism, it is also full of heartbreak and human failings and mistakes. I loved it' KATE SAWYER Evocative, intoxicating and basically impossible to put down' BOBBY PALMER, bestselling author of ISAAC AND THE EGG Dal punto di vista del lettore, sembra di essere trasportati all’interno della vita privata dei personaggi. Li si osserva intimamente e si sente ogni emozione in modo potente, come fosse la propria.

Penguin Michael Joseph has snapped up an “addictive, tender and surprising” debut novel from Claire Daverley in a two-book deal. Wow... There's something special about reading a book in January that you know will make the top five by the end of the year. The story of Will and Rosie is one of missed opportunities and the different paths we choose that lead us to self-discovery. Daverley's writing is poignant and emotional, capturing the raw intensity of young love and the longing that accompanies missed chances. Will and Rosie go to the same high school but haven’t talked until one night at a bonfire where he inexplicably opens up to her. His past has given him a bad boy reputation, so he’s guarded with his emotions, but he feels safe with Rosie. She, on the other hand, is a rule-follower and good student whose future goals, along with her twin brother Josh’s, have largely been dictated by their successful mother. Will has no plans for uni, while musically-talented Rosie is being steered to Oxford, yet somehow this mismatched pair become best friends.
