About this deal

However, you need to sand a paint finish before varnish only if the finish is riddled with imperfections, dust, dirt, and bumps. Varnish has a transparent (colorless) finish and will highlight imperfections, dust, dirt, and bumps once it dries.

Alternative satin finish if you want a better price than Ronseals: Rustins EAVS500 500ml Outdoor Varnish Satin The word “varnish” is often used as a generic term for any type of wood finish, including polyurethane, lacquer, and shellac, but it technically refers to a specific combination of resins, oils, and solvents. Varnish has been around for centuries—in the beginning, the formula consisted of wood sap and alcohol—while polyurethane is a relatively modern invention made from synthetics. (Lacquer and shellac contain other ingredients and are generally used to achieve a specific look.) What Does Varnish Do?

It makes the wood easier to keep clean

Use a metal scraper to gently scrape away the varnish and expose the wood. It should be soft enough to come away quite easily without too much effort. However, generally speaking, you should apply a good layer of stripper to the wood using an old (or dispensable) brush.

Varnish doesn’t change the paint color shade as most varnishes are transparent with no paint pigments. Their glossy transparent finish can make the finish look glossies but it doesn’t change the color shade. It’s oil based so in my opinion darkens timber, perhaps even a little more than Ronseal however I don’t personally find that to be a problem. I think the finish enhances over a long period of time and it’s a very natural looking finish that essentially lifts the overall look. The thing I like about this formula is it will go nicely on top of paint and certainly does highlight and even accentuate a paint finish. Make sure the surface you apply to is solid or it’ll flake and look naff. This is pretty much 101 of any paintwork prep though. It’ll go slightly darker than your natural finish but that’s to be expected of almost every single varnish. Shellac – This is not strictly a varnish, and is the main ingredient for French Polish for furniture. It is secreted by a beetle in South East Asia and usually bought in flakes which are diluted with alcohol before use. The ‘de-waxed’ version of shellac, which has under gone a process to have most of the waxy substances removed, can be used as a primer for other varnishes, such as Polyurethane and Acrylic which do not penetrate well into the wood. Shellac can be clear, or there are a range of shades

Apply thin layers of wax

However, acrylic varnish will change the paint color as it’s pre-mixed with acrylic paint and will produce a colorful glossy coating. The mixture will have the paint pigments of acrylic paint and the durability of varnish. Which Types of Paint Can You Varnish Over?

Water-based varnishes have come a long way over the last decade or so and are now just as good or better than the traditional spirit-based varnishes used in the past. Excellent examples of modern day water-based varnishes include Work with the gain rather than across it, and ensure that you do not overload your brush or cloth as this might cause drips. You want to try and get as even a spread as possible so that you get an even colour across the surface; drips will ruin this if you do not catch them in time. Wood is quite a delicate material although it may seem to be sturdy and durable. Nevertheless, despite a strong appearance, wooden objects require quite a lot of care and proper maintenance to look nice and serve you long. And one of the most common issues owners face is whether or not a varnish can be used on top of a painted wooden piece. Apply 2-3 varnish coats over paint with a paint sprayer or roller. Wait until one coat dries before applying the next one. Water-based varnish takes around 6 hours to dry between coats, while oil-based varnish takes around 24 hours. If you need to varnish rough surfaces like shingles and/or rough-sawn wood, it’s best to use oil-based varnishes. They will penetrate the wood better than latex ones, which is why they are often ideal for rough surfaces that require quite a lot of varnishing. Moreover, they have a few additional perks:

Yes is the simple answer. However, plywood comes in different grades so some need more preparation than others. If you have the finest grade there’s very little prep needed so you can start painting plywood almost straight away. Like the Rustins satin, it’s touch dry in 30 minutes and re-coatable in four hours. You’l also need four to five thin coats to get a really nice looking finish. It’s almost identical to the satin but with a shinier finish. Brush cleaning is easy and the formula is pretty good as far as non drip is concerned. Varnish is also its own primer and undercoat, although in some cases it is better to thin the first coat with roughly 10% white spirit (for solvent varnishes) and water for water-based varnishes. This is particularly true if you are using a polyurethane varnish. In most cases it is also better to apply this with a lint free cloth and you are able to rub the varnish into the wood grain better than you could do with a brush. In this project we focus on varnishes, and if a colour is needed, stains. We will explain when and how to use your stain with your varnish to get the best finish. Varnish Ingredients – What Makes Up Varnishes? Make sure that the stain is thoroughly mixed before you start to apply it so that you get an even colour throughout. Applying a Stain
