About this deal

I wasn't so keen on the ending, either, unfortunately. It's more that I didn't find the reaction to what Anna does quite believable, I just don't think it would have happened like that. Maybe it's end the story on a hopeful note, but I had various question marks over it - would Anna have actually have done that? Would she have said what she said? - and it just felt a little unrealistic? But maybe that's just me.

In uno dei miei libri ho letto una frase che dice: Siamo le nipoti delle streghe che non siete riusciti a bruciare.Dealing with issues of victim blaming, casual sexism and the still very skewed way of "dealing" with things, The Burning shines a light right into the darkest corners of reality. And then there's the fact that we don't really know much about any of the characters. Anna likes to swim, and was on her swim team at her previous school. Cat, one of Anna's new friends, is really into photography, and wants to be a photography. Alisha is super smart, hard working, and always gets top grades. Robin is a carer for his disabled mum. That's as much as we find out about them. No British Council complies with data protection law in the UK and laws in other countries that meet internationally accepted standards. I found it fascinating listening to Bates talk about everyday sexism on the radio while I was reading this book (great timing), though I didn’t expect the book to engross me so deeply that I only stopped reading it to write this review.

The Burning by Laura Bates | Waterstones

This novel tells a story of girls who have been tortured through a campaign of bullying, harassment and shaming, (with a small surprise of fantasy element too). We see the story of Anna, and Anna's discovery of Maggie and the horrific suffering she endured hundreds of years ago. Anna comincia a fare delle ricerche per portare alla luce la vita di questa giovane donna ed entra in una strana sintonia con le sue vicende. And does this kind of moving and heartbreaking story really need supernatural elements to attract readers’ attention. Nope! I don’t think so.This is a great book with relatable characters and real-life problems that that could definitely happen. It evokes sympathy, empathy and anger from the reader. On the cover, Holly Bourne describes it as a book teen girls need to read, and I agree.

I loved this book so much! It’s a modern story with a historical twist, where the two girls’ stories set in different centuries run alongside each other. I enjoyed the comparison of Anna to the witch hunt 400 years ago, as it made the story feel more real and balanced. The Burning lights a fire in you - one that makes you want to fight for change and ignite sparks in others so the fire spreads and spreads.' - HOLLY BOURNE Why? Why? I was so ready to love this book! It started so good and slowly turned into something strange, messy and URO (unidentified reading object)!Although this wasn’t one of the best read, I ever experience when dealing with such issues, the book was still a good read. The writing is very easy to read, there are some bits that feels very draggy, especially the parts of history. Its nice to say its parallel and relatable to show these issues are going on for a long time but the storyline of it was draggy. I was expecting more storyline from the side characters but there wasn’t much. I wish we have seen those pov and more involvement with them and Anna. Trigger Warnings: This book features rape, non-consensual pornography, sex shaming, victim blaming, bullying, discussion of abuse due to abortion, and discussion of death from cancer. In the meantime, as part of a research project, Anna digs into the history of Maggie, a local girl convicted for witchcraft 400 years previously. As both girls’ stories start to unravel, it becomes clear that attitudes towards young women have not moved on much over the last four centuries. Some of the dialogue is a little weird and unnatural, too. The speech at the end, plus the reactions to it, felt unrealistic. And there are times when Anna is directly describing something through speech and I just can't imagine an actual person sat there spewing those metaphors out loud. I think the problem about the story is author’s choice to juggle with too many issues at the same time. We had already sexual assault, body and slut shaming on our plate but she add more issues to the pile such as abortion, pregnancy, more shaming and yes you just dropped your plate because you cannot handle entire horrifying issues at the same story that a regular human being can handle.

The class book review: The Burning | Tes Magazine

Something that I didn’t like is that it took me so long to understand how the story of Maggie was important and related to Anna’s story. But now I do, and I think it’s completely true that people should start to think that not every rumour is true, and that even if it is true that person doesn’t have the right to point fingers at you even if they know the whole story because someone’s life is none of their business.Unlike O’Neill, though, Bates allows her heroine to have the last word. In a cinematically rousing culmination, Anna turns on her harassers. It is particularly satisfying that Simon, the originator, is given no arc of redemption, though the reader glimpses the nastiness of his father early on; and that the headmaster who dares to suggest that Anna’s choices somehow justified her subsequent treatment is verbally eviscerated by her furious mother. This is a hard and challenging read, but its power and necessity are impossible to deny. I don’t want to be cruel and give two stars to this story because I got the intention of the author to write something meaningful and epic for the victims of abuse, rape and violence. I just didn’t like her approach and her way to tell the story. A simple, pure, emotional, genuine, honest, realistic and objective approach to this kind of sensitive issues are always more preferable for me.
