About this deal

So glad I bought this on a whim (read: based on the beautiful cover) when visiting John Sandoe Books in Chelsea! A razor-sharp, laugh-out-loud novel that re-imagines the cast of Nancy Mitford's The Pursuit of Love. Beautiful, guileless aristocrat Linda Radlett falls disastrously in love with a rich banker and then a broke radical before finding happiness with an urbane Frenchman. She was awarded an exhibition to Trinity College, Cambridge, where she read Modern Languages from 1984-1987, before starting her career in journalism. So fresh, fun and full of heart, charm and whimsy - and that devastating ending comes all the more sharply because the reader has been having such a good time with the Radletts (extra points for including a reference to Cromer!

Or rather, she treats tiny little things as if they were international catastrophes and international catastrophes as if they were tiny little things. The fact that it is a modern adaptation has been done so well, it has avoided being a superficial reading of The Pursuit of Love so well.

A razor-sharp, laugh-out-loud novel that re-imagines the cast of Nancy Mitford’s The Pursuit of Love. I also heartily disliked the only India Knight book I have read because of the the smug middle class protagonists, almost all awful people. But I will stop listing them now, as you really need to read them in their wonderfully written rant mode to fully appreciate them!

She uses the device of no phone signal, and a ban on electronics (“analogue children in a digital age”) to allow the Radletts to be as old-fashioned and wild as Mitford’s original clan. A family setup that might have sounded feasible in the 1920s seems beyond what my suspension of disbelief is willing to handle; the main character, India, comes across as a bit vacant - we're constantly told that she's endlessly fascinating, charming, clever etc. This is a book full of lovely things: clothes and curtains and old Apple Mac computers in “boiled-sweet pink”. Armed with a key and new knowledge about his parents' past, Nik sets out to unlock the secrets that his mother has been holding onto his whole life.
