About this deal

Each tea leaf is rolled into a tiny ball (these little pellets were mistaken for gunpowder by sixteenth century traders, hence the name). Add lemon and a sprig of mint to create a refined iced tea refresher – ideal served by the jug-full in the afternoon sunshine. The bold flavour profile of this tea makes it a popular classic that can be enjoyed both hot and cold-brewed. This enchanting combination creates a tea experience that is both exhilarating and soothing, making it the perfect companion for moments of rejuvenation. Later on in the afternoon I might try something like a Darjeeling that has the muscatel flavour, or maybe even a high-grown Ceylon, but definitely my favourite brew, and the one that I drink the most of, is English Breakfast.

It does look like swamp water if you have the leaves unfurl in the bottom of your mug; don't let this put you off. Produced using steam and rolling equipment to roll the tea leaves into green balls that open up when steeped, this tea hails from the Anhui province in Eastern China. The second is that the English term may stem from the Mandarin Chinese term for freshly brewed, which is ‘Gang Pao De’ but the word Gunpowder is now used throughout the tea trade to describe clean, tightly-rolled green leaves.

A recent study has established that when you put Gunpowder Green Tea vs Sencha, the former appears to have a higher antioxidant capacity. Formosa gunpowder: A gunpowder style tea grown in Taiwan near Keelung, it is claimed to have its own characteristic aroma, different from that of Zhejiang Province gunpowder grown in mainland China. Pingshui gunpowder ( 平水珠茶): The original and most common variety of gunpowder tea with larger pearls, better color, and a more aromatic infusion, which is commonly sold as Temple of Heaven Gunpowder or Pinhead Gunpowder, the former being a common brand of this tea variety. Oxidation of green tea, which if allowed to continue would change it into oolong tea or black tea, has often been incorrectly referred to as fermentation; fermentation is actually unique to pu'erh and "dark" teas). The distinctive rolling method of gunpowder green tea leaves ensures a unique brewing experience, with each unfurling leaf releasing a burst of flavour and aroma. Please always read the labels, warnings, and directions provided with the product before using or consuming a product. Menthos Green Tea, known as an exceptional aperitif, has been crafted from the highest quality Chinese gunpowder and American Spearmint leaves. Not only does it boast a rich green tea flavour, our Gunpowder Supreme is also packed with antioxidants and is known to aid healthy digestion, making it a wonderfully restorative, soothing infusion. This version, which is high in caffeine content can also be infused more than once which will reduce the slightly tangy character. The tea - Kandy Broken Orange Pekoe - has a nice flavour but it's been smashed to little tiny pieces like you'd get in a tea bag rather the rough breaking of the leaves a BOP implies.

Early on, I used to have around 4 or 5 cups of this a day, finding myself confused as to why I couldn't get to sleep until gone 1am in the morning. China produces 782,400 tonnes of green tea per year and exports 218,700 tonnes of this to the rest of the world. So, for just-off the boil water, simply boil the kettle, let it sit for three to four minutes, then brew your tea, 2+ mins, no milk.
