About this deal

I was so struck with your words that by page 8 I had broken with my personal policy of treating books with care so as to preserve their “brand newishness”…and I got out a pencil to underline things. The deep dive into the palace, rulers, and secrets was most interesting and I feel most thought out. I was nearly in tears during her stay in hospital which I have not felt about a book for a long time.

Ren must infiltrate the palace and complete the mission herself – even if it means yielding to the place and the men she hates most. The book feels intoxicating with endlessly beautiful language and creative touches that really bring this intricate world to life. On both accounts, theses books, despite their rawness, have really spraked something inside me and I cannot wait to read Chis’s next novel. This structure gives the plot a somewhat uneven pacing, but the battery of revelations during the finale was perfectly pitched. I believe that the good-humoured and effortful struggle to understand one another’s lives is at worst a good way to pass long journeys, and at best an antidote to violence. I have been walking around my house with your book in my hand afraid to keep reading it and fearful that I won’t have the guts to finish it. However, after the horror of the last 50 pages, I don’t think I could have read morel Did you mean that to be something that really happened in the story or part of her imagination/madness ….

i read and loved little bee (chris cleave's 2008 novel) and i have been an ardent and faithful word-of-mouther for the last year, pushing it onto the bookshelves of anyone who will hear me out. Having lived outside of Manhattan on 9/11, it was very understandable that this could happen but perhaps so painful to understand how quickly it could happen. The most confusing aspect of the book remains Cleave's incessant harping on class-conflict -- a surprisingly old-fashioned focus (at least in its artless presentation here). From where I come (Finland) Chris can also refer to a woman and I always took it for granted you were one. I can understand why some people do not like this style of writing and cannot get into the book at all.

Though all these skills are ones we have seen brought to life in other works of Fantasy, the author manages to put her own twist on them seemingly making them unique to this story. I am not saying Muslims didn't get a lot of unfair backlash but I am saying that truth needs to read as truth, not your agenda driven attempt at getting me to react to something.

It's a word peculiar to my family, although I can't remember where it came from or which of my kids coined it. The use of “an adulterous woman’s life is torn apart” as a drawing point cheapens the depth of emotion and the true humanity of your heroine. Cleave does not appear to come from the same milieu as his narrator (the alternative: he is, and is carrying the biggest of chips on his shoulders). It's a wild journey, and a queasy one, and will make quite a film, with those barrage balloons flying high over the blood-filled Thames. We see her struggle through all the stolen memories she holds inside, memories which can force their way into her mind and are impossible to predict.Although it was fast paced from the start, I didn't find myself desperate to flip as many pages as possible until the last quarter. At times the novel seems also to want to be taken seriously as a book about class, and about love and loss and betrayal, but the relentless thrust of the story wrenches these ambitions out of shape. There are a multitude of other characters that we get introduced too from the other members of Lynx Unit; Dez, Margo, Esteban and Sayida, to Leo, Renata’s only friend in court.
