First Edition, with 3 frontispieces, decorative titles, numerous illustrations in the text and coloured pictorial endpapers, original cloth (red/green/blue respectively), yellow cloth backs lettered in gilt, coloured tops, fore-edges very lightly spotted else a near fine set in unclipped dustwrapper, the wrappers minimally chafed at heads and tails of backstrips.I did shudder whenever he described his cats, ‘One’ (a Siamese – I find them only slightly less repulsive than lilies) and ‘Four’, but his gardening descriptions are excellent and his critical humour irresistible. I’m delighted to see this review as I adore all of his books as they are so well written and they always make me laugh. I don’t know if you’re aware of Umberto Eco’s comment in ‘Travels in Hyperreality’ on books talking to one another, but I’m beginning to think that blogs on books do the same thing!

I love the description of the rockery studded with speckled concrete stones and the rank, stinking pond.hardback in unclipped colour pictorial dust jacket; 317pp, with black and white illustrations plus colour pictorial endpapers. The wonderful Pianist made some fresh scones today and for once ‘life-inside’ seems very nice indeed. Nichols naturally takes on Oldfield too – finding they don’t agree on everything – Oldfield’s silences speaking volumes.
