About this deal

The image of the tenants enjoying their moon pops, which also adorns the book’s cover, shows the creatures gazing incredulously at their gleaming treats in the dark of night, their faces illuminated by their moon pops’ light. Baek lights them with glowing touches of the moon, lemony yellow lights that illuminate the darkness and provide comfort and connections. And so on, until Mom’s enticing promise of treasure in the deep sea persuades her little Treasure Hunter to take a dive. One classroom used Moon Pops to teach the structure of an LE book project, work that will begin soon.

Based on the Korean fable of the moon rabbit, the tale takes place in a multistory apartment building at night. And this summer, I read Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr, which might be one of the best books I’ve read in a long time! Turning the page catches readers by surprise, though: the family of fireflies is decidedly comical and silly-looking. The art style feels like a stop-motion collage with dioramas for the background and miniature objects and black and white illustrations for the animal characters.

Astrid Lindgren Award winner Baek draws gently on Korean folklore while keeping her feet firmly planted in the modern day, with some delicious visual texture. The artist uses real figurines and perfect lighting to capture the most pleasant way to portray this story.

Vanessa, an LE teacher, is reading The Wisdom Wheel by Alberto Villolda and re-reading Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain. Illustrated in otherworldly mixed-media dioramas, this quirky and colorful picture book spins a new story from the common East Asian fable of the rabbit in the moon. A retelling of the Korean folktale, "The Legend of Moon Rabbit," with an urban setting and with a modern twist. She said the book “aligns really well with Montessori principles” and suggested it may be a good book to guide a parent discussion. A strange and delightful tale made for lingering over--and perfect for reading with your own moon pop .One of the grannies struggling with the heat decides to make ice pops out of the melting moon, but while that does keep everyone cool, it leaves the rabbits from the moon homeless.
