About this deal

We were shown videotapes in which supposed former employees hang their head and rue the day they ever thought to steal that leather jacket. Anyone who's read a few of his books will know that Sedaris's family and friends are a rich seam of comic inspiration which he shamelessly and frequently mines. We were given a lecture by the chief of security, who told us that Macy's Herald Square suffers millions of dollars' worth of employee theft per year.

This book seems sort of thrown together, most of the stories not relating to anything in particular, whether to each other or to any unified theme, but I would expect some of his other collections to have better focus, and I will retain his other books in my “to read” list based on that expectation. Most of the managers are former elves who have worked their way up the candy-cane ladder but retain vivid memories of their days in uniform. David Sedaris's beloved holiday collection is new again with six more pieces, including a never before published story. Stories are fine with perfectly produced rounded music intros, but it is the audience that really provides the energy.I thought I'd better read it now during the holidays so I wouldn't have to wait another year to get to it--I can never watch Christmas movies or read holiday stories when it's not Christmas; it's depressing. One of the short stories is despairing on how absolutely awful school plays and pageants can be for people without a child to coo over in the performance. I applauded him in my essay for class for his work ethic but included that these jokes greatly soured whatever joy I had garnered by a long evening with friends reading manga surrounded by people who enjoyed reading. We were allowed to choose our own names and given permission to change them according to out outlook on the snowy world. His tone is often dark, even bleak, but there's a wry quality in his stories that lets you know he's really doing it all for effect - setting you up for an even bigger laugh because you know he's enjoying every minute of telling his sad, hilarious stories.

This drinking-man's companion can be enjoyed by the warmth of a raging fire, the glow of a brilliantly decorated tree, or even in the backseat of a van or police car.

Kind of like John Green whose work I didn’t read until after he led me and a small mob of people out of Millennium Park because it had closed during an art event and gave everyone candy. I know that at the time this was written, it was in regular use of everyone's vernacular, but I guess I have come to enjoy it being mostly in our past, because it definitely startled me.

I listen to the audio version which features Sedaris himself reading, I enjoy listening to him so much more then reading it,he brings that extra something. Yesterday, I was trying to describe and then read a couple of short excerpts from the latter essay, when I found a YouTube clip of Sedaris reading the essay. I suppose there’s also the potential for too many mediocre reviews, and I guess that’s the guy whom everybody thinks can’t make up his freaking mind. Then there's account of the time his sister rescued a local whore at Christmas time, which I also found funny. I wanted this to be a fun story of how I found my new favorite author and met them before I started reading any of their work. They closed the meeting saying, "I want you to remember that even if you are assigned Photo Elf on a busy weekend, YOU ARE NOT SANTA'S SLAVE. The problem this time was the inclusion of some fictional shorts in addition to the riotous autobiographical entries. I figure that at least as an elf I will have a place; I'll be in Santa's Village with all the other elves. I picture it to be the tallest building in that state and I have decided they hire their employees straight out of prison. This afternoon we were given presentations and speeches in a windowless conference room crowded with desks and plastic chairs.

However, as a bright side to my mother’s fickle mental state, she was brilliant and often savagely funny when lucid. If you ever held an undignified job, this is somehow your story - even if you never (pardon the pun) stooped so low as to play an elf. I prefer his more personal tales to his bizarre fantastical stories of death and destruction and general evil. If you want to get the full Sedaris experience, make sure you get the audiobook (Sedaris narrates all his own work). The collection of holiday stories approach by Dave Sedaris was intriguing, captivating and often entertaining. David Sedaris is a regular contributor to The New Yorker and Public Radio International's "This American Life.
