The children are unlikely to be familiar with the flower names on the last slide. They are quite unusual flowers, but they all grow in the UK and Ireland. They are all beautiful and they are all different.

Building this understanding from a young age builds empathy in young people, as well as giving them a more realistic world view. For many of us, it’s a desire to have equal opportunities for everyone. Many strive to have respect for all, despite differences between us. Helping your children to adopt the same values is an important aspect when they’re growing up. Let’s find out about how children can express these ideas through reading and writing their own diversity poems. There are also fun role-play activities, beautiful, thought-provoking videos exemplifying each theme, and various discussion activities regarding how to show the skills in different areas of their own lives. No further resources are required, everything that you need to present the assemblies is included.

Now think about your class and each member of it. It is the combination of children with all their differences that makes it such a rich place. You will need the PowerPoint slides that accompany this assembly ( Celebrating Difference) and the means to display them. You could also use these We Are All Different Inspirational Posters to decorate your classroom with, too. You can also find more ways to celebrate diversity over on our 5 Diversity Games and Activities blog. How can we combat discrimination? There are a few different events throughout the year where you can explore the idea of embracing our differences with your class. LGBT History Month takes place annually during February, and is a month-long celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, as well as the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements.
