About this deal

The GM sets a difficulty number that ranges from Three (easy) to Six (Extreme) and you roll your dice. Each die that meets or beats that difficulty number is a success. I was the GM when we played and I found that the adventure included in the River City book was a mixed bag. While it features an interesting story, it’s not written in a way where you can just sit down and run it from the book. Instead of presenting a step-by-step walkthrough, which is what I expect from an introductory adventure, it throws your right in assuming you’ve already mastered all the rules.

Since Magical Kitties Save the Day is an all ages game, everyone should be able to join in the play and have fun. Each problem is described in detail including the Problem’s Agenda as well as a set of Adventure Ingredients for the GM. These give the GM some ways to tie each problem into their own ongoing story. In the character section, I mentioned that there were attributes (cunning, fierce, and cute) that you assigned either a 1, 2, or 3 to. Those numbers reflect how many dice you get to roll when you use that skill. While I can see the desire to not repeat information in more than one place this adventure would be much simpler to run if everything was just presented within the adventure text, with all of the information there when you need to use it. Due to this, I don’t think many GMs would be able to run this adventure on the spot, without any prior prep work, unless their players are willing to put up with a lot of flipping through books during the game. Kitty Noir takes its inspiration from classic film noir and crime movies from the 1930s-1950s, and from Golden Age science fiction stories of time travel. If you’ve been looking for a way to introduce your friends and family to roleplaying games, Magical Kitties is the perfect game to do it!

In Magical Kitties Save the Day, one player — known as the Game Master (GM) — has a very special role. They describe the world in which the magical kitties live to the other players and, when the kitties take action, they use the rules of the game to figure out what happens next.I will note that early on in the rulebook, it does suggest that an adult, older sibling or babysitter be the GM when playing with kids, but it wasn’t until getting to this section on running the game that I saw why. Second, a Magical Power should have an active use: Part of the fun of the game is for players to think up creative and crazy ways that they can use their powers. Players shouldn’t have to passively wait for the GM to cue them. The first I already mentioned a bit above and that’s the fact that both versions of the game come with the same box insert. While this makes sense from a cost and production standpoint I couldn’t help but feel that my game was missing something upon seeing that insert for the first time. Seeing the four empty spots made for holding cards just tossed in my face the fact that my standard edition doesn’t include the cards. As part of the Cat Eyes Detective Agency, the magical kitties work together to solve crimes and uncover the mysterious secrets of Sunset City. Because there’s much more to this hometown than meets the eye. Someone has frozen the city in time, inside a magical bubble, and they don’t want anyone to know about it!
