About this deal

The wearing of Custodian Helmets led to CID (Criminal Investigation Department) calling their uniformed colleagues ‘woodentops’.

Their job was to look after female prisoners at police stations or the courts. As mentioned before, the traditional custodial helmet was made part of the uniform in 1865, before women were employed by the force. As a result, there are separate hat styles for men and women. Interestingly enough, other countries also adopted similar versions of the hat in their police forces such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand from the late nineteenth century until recently. The lists of police uniforms and equipment here are not exhaustive, nor specific for each force, but give a general overview of typical 'kit' used in the United Kingdom. Aerosol incapacitants are classified as prohibited weapons by virtue of Section 5 of the Firearms Act 1968 and possession of such sprays is therefore illegal by the general public. They may only be possessed with the authority of the Defence Council or the Scottish Ministers. [31] Police officers, as Crown servants, are exempt from the requirements of the legislation and can have lawful possession of an incapacitant spray whilst acting in their capacity as a constable or where necessary for the purposes of their duty. Some forces adopted the helmet without any badge, others designed their own, usually with the county's arms or crest in the centre. A few forces adopted an Australian style bush hat and one wore a helmet constructed of straw. [8] [9] [10] Helmets worn by Glasgow Police in 1919. These helmets are no longer in use in Scotland.

Until the mid-20th century, British-style helmets were in use with the municipal police forces of several Dutch cities, most notably The Hague. [39] [40] Archived copy". Its creation signalled a massive change in the design of the police hat. The hat moved away from the top-hat style which proved very impractical when chasing down criminals. Instead, a helmet style was introduced which took inspiration from military-style hats. Unmarked police vehicles are used for a variety of purposes, including undercover operations or road policing duties. Most marked police vehicles are white or silver with retroreflective livery markings on the side. These markings usually take the form of a blue and yellow battenburg markings along the side.
