Overdrives are often talked about, and I must admit for a long time I was somewhat ignorant. Only in the last year or so I learned how they can be used to boost an amp, rather than for their own overdrive/distortion. Boss SD-1 - it was that sound I was looking for, that almost everyone is looking for and I bought lots of boutique and expensive pedals and all I needed was this one. D5: 1n4148, D6: 1n4148 and a LED connected in series allow D4 and or D6 lets to illuminate ? I recently put just an LED in D6 with out a diode and it doesn’t light. Going off the name and the enclosure style, you’d probably guess the BOSS DS-2 Turbo Distortion, but the BOSS pedal has four knobs instead of three, and honestly it doesn't sound anything like this. I think they're going after the classic BOSS DS-1 Distortion. My theory here is that they didn't want it to be utterly shameless. I think they wanted to throw you off a little bit and make you think it's unique.

The Boss SD-1 Overdrive pedal was first released in the mid 1980’s as a replacement for the older OD-1. Not to be confused with the similarly named DS-1, the Boss SD-1 is an overdrive pedal, not a distortion pedal. It’s just the way it is. We already have wah, distortion, reverb, and all these awesome effects. These days, the art of pedal making is more about finding your own unique stamp to put on an existing circuit, effect, or sound. It works exceptionally well with darker guitars such as Les Pauls because it removes a lot of the low end before you hit the amp by setting the output gain to maximum. When this low en is removed it gives you a much clear and punchy drive signal.I?ve been using lots of boutique pedals but I have returned to basics with this pedal. Drive section sounds great especially on a cleaner / at the edge of breakup set amp, but I don?t necessarily use it for this purpose. This first gain stage has a 1meg pot for gain with 3 diodes in assymetrical orientation. R5 which is connected to the gain pot sets the minimum gain and C3 and R6 together set gain as well as dictate the frequencies that are boosted and clipped, in this case 723hz and above. D4, D5, and D6 are diodes which clip the signal in an assymetrical fashion. There's another SoundTank clone by a company called POS, which I think stands for Piece of Shame. Either that or Penguins on Sabbatical. Or maybe Periodically Observant Soothsayers. Honestly, I could do this all day, but we have to finish the article at some point.
