“I could have done 90 per cent of my career with an SD-1

Overdrives are often talked about, and I must admit for a long time I was somewhat ignorant. Only in the last year or so I learned how they can be used to boost an amp, rather than for their own overdrive/distortion. Boss SD-1 - it was that sound I was looking for, that almost everyone is looking for and I bought lots of boutique and expensive pedals and all I needed was this one. Photo 24 (left): Twist together your 10k Ω resistors and one end of a jumper wire, then solder the joint. Photo 25 (right): Solder your .0068 µF cap to the 10k Ω resistors and attach a jumper to one of the resistors.

BOSS SD-1 Super Overdrive | guitarguitar

Since its release in 1981, the workhorse SD-1 Super Overdrive has been the core gain pedal for generations of players across every musical genre. Based around the revolutionary asymmetrical clipping circuit from the OD-1 Overdrive—one of the three original BOSS compact pedals from 1977—the SD-1 delivers rich, smooth, and highly musical overdrive tones that continue to inspire guitarists everywhere. Lots of boutique takes of this pedal do not cut the low end as much, and they have a much higher output level. But the amount of output gain and low end cut I find that just correct. Explore in-depth articles on BOSS pedals and get inspiring knowledge to help spark your creativity. Amps The real question here is: what are they cloning? Going off the name and the enclosure style, you’d probably guess the BOSS DS-2 Turbo Distortion, but the BOSS pedal has four knobs instead of three, and honestly it doesn't sound anything like this. I think they're going after the classic BOSS DS-1 Distortion. My theory here is that they didn't want it to be utterly shameless. I think they wanted to throw you off a little bit and make you think it's unique.

The Boss SD-1 Overdrive pedal was first released in the mid 1980’s as a replacement for the older OD-1. Not to be confused with the similarly named DS-1, the Boss SD-1 is an overdrive pedal, not a distortion pedal. It seems that time has favored the ubiquitous Ibanez Tube Screamer (TS-9, TS-808, etc.) over Boss’s contribution to the overdrive market, but SD-1 stands on its own as a unique and versatile, albeit underrated, overdrive. Guitar pedals as we know them were invented in the early 1960s. Most pedals you see on the market today (including mine) are clones of circuits that were made 20, 30 years ago. That’s not bad. It’s just the way it is. We already have wah, distortion, reverb, and all these awesome effects. These days, the art of pedal making is more about finding your own unique stamp to put on an existing circuit, effect, or sound. It works exceptionally well with darker guitars such as Les Pauls because it removes a lot of the low end before you hit the amp by setting the output gain to maximum. When this low en is removed it gives you a much clear and punchy drive signal.I?ve been using lots of boutique pedals but I have returned to basics with this pedal. Drive section sounds great especially on a cleaner / at the edge of breakup set amp, but I don?t necessarily use it for this purpose. This first gain stage has a 1meg pot for gain with 3 diodes in assymetrical orientation. R5 which is connected to the gain pot sets the minimum gain and C3 and R6 together set gain as well as dictate the frequencies that are boosted and clipped, in this case 723hz and above. D4, D5, and D6 are diodes which clip the signal in an assymetrical fashion. There's another SoundTank clone by a company called POS, which I think stands for Piece of Shame. Either that or Penguins on Sabbatical. Or maybe Periodically Observant Soothsayers. Honestly, I could do this all day, but we have to finish the article at some point.
